Specifics About Working As A CNA

If you have ever thought you may like to establish a career in the medical care industry, then you no doubt know about doctors, nurses, psychologists and the like. If you are really gun-ho on becoming a medical professional, then you know you need to start from the bottom, and work your way up.

That means you will need to become a licensed CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant. Now I'm certain if you have done your due diligence you already know the criteria for becoming a CNA, the licensing fees, the courses you need to attend, the guidelines you need to follow etc. There is a seemingly endless amount of info out there, and it can be complicated sometimes to get what you want or need.

However, in the pages upon pages of details you have scoured, you perhaps did not find the most pertinent information on being a CNA.. Which is.. What actually are the functions of the CNA?

For novices, CNA's are the lowest members of the medical profession. This does NOT suggest they are the least important! On the contrary, during your time as a CNA you will give much needed assistants to the doctors and nurses above you, so that everything can run smoothly. If not as a result of the hard work of CNAs in the country, many nursing homes, and other assisted living facilities, would not be possible, and many elderly people would be without recourse, and no one to look after them and ensure they were alright. CNAs are also found in our schools as acting nurses, aiding our children with their wounds.

The actual duties of a CNA will differ greatly from state to state, but there is an overall general outline you are expected to follow. You can assume that during your time as a CNA you will be responsible for the following things:

Everyday Patient Care:

Your first and most important duty as a CNA, is the day to day care of patients under your care. This will consist of, but may not be limited to, these specific tasks; feeding the patient, preparing food selection for the patient, having the patient dressed in the morning and undressed at nighttime, changing the bedpan for the patient, helping the patient in bathing, or arranging to go out on a trip, preparing exercise programs, executing exercise programs, taking the vital symptoms of the patient, and even measuring out and giving patients their prescription drugs (this last one will vary considerably on the state you are in and the requirements you needed to become a CNA in the first place. )

Record Keeping:

The next most important responsibility you will have as a CNA is keeping proper records and files. You must stick to the guidelines provided to you during training, so that the doctor, other nurses, and other CNAs can properly care for the patient once your shift is finished and it is time for you to go home.
